Wax Mantic Interview

Wax Mantic shares some of his time...

  • Sunday Morning: Name your 3 biggest life influences... why?
Wax Mantic: That's a tough question ...I like music, i began loving music via rap, hip hop music, at my 10 year old, stricly hip hop...but few years after and thus with the importance of sampling i discovered others styles, genres, labels, instruments....so many producers of many styles....Thx to the sample culture!
Sorry so...i'll try to respond you even if it's tough, but first of all you can check some names of influences on my Fan Page, or Face Book, you'll see that BIG list lol...ok...let's go! Jay Dee, Pete Rock, DJ Premier!
As i said....it's hard hard....

  • SM: Verbally portray your sound....

WM: Calm, Cool, Cosmic Soul, Atmospherical, jazzysoul, Galactic Soul, Hip Hop Chill, Floating Waves...I hope so! (NOTE: sorry, it's not verbs...)

  • SM: Now describe Wax-Mantic in tweet format (less than 140 characters, twitter-related abbreviations)

WM: A perfectionnist, technician, composer, a black music lover, sampling lover, culture musical addict

  • SM: If you were given the opportunity to collaborate with any artisan (visual, audible, edible).... who? .... why?

WM: Waw...in my situation, it's not really reasonable, even if i'm no more an beginner but force is to note the reality that's just now that i'm begining to do my stuff, i prefred taking my time, and feed my ears, feed my mind, knowledge others stuffs, genres, focus on synthesis, analysing people like Dre, Dilla, Axelrod, Brian Eno, Timbaland, Rock Prog bands... some era like the 70's etc new wave...etc so as a beginner i can't even have that type of question in my mind... i have no names right now, like this...but sure like the art, have respect for it, and i'd do something with director, working on some footage, working on video games, scoring movies, abstrac project...right now i've been solicited by few peeps/homeys on soundcloud, that i respect in order to complete their tunes and working together...which is a kind thing, and good excerise...

  • SM: If you could teach listeners one thing through inspiration drawn from your music what would it be?

WM: Play with the space, spatiakisation, the fact of playin with details, sometimes just some "clicks", a soft velocity, touch of notes will gaining the space and create a sphere, an environnement, as i like play with the "air" things....few Kalimba on th right side for ex and slighty delayed...and the tips is to know how to play with the technic, as i've got a sound engineer backgroud, i like playing with technic, i mean i compose with them! Push the limit! Still!

  • SM: List your 3 favorite uses of a sample.... explain why they are your favorite
WM: First of all i like and got a much respect to the sampling culture, although i began by composing, still followed that culture, which had a big impact on me, the sampling is THE reason of my musical knowledge! Trust me! Via Sampling i understood and liked, loved, analysed so many styles, originals, technics, labels, in-house engineer/ musicans...But, sampled a little!!! I've got a list of a research, or samples founded that i'll use one day i hope!
After years and years of composing, right know i'm at ease composing, even if i've got some chops, but really little!
To respond on your question, i like searching a rarerty first, don't like using the classic or the used many times....there's no risk, no originality right there...
I can just loop the sample, or still on looping skills, like found the right moment, to loop it from the middle or from the end and began from the intro...you know what i mean? Making a loop but begining from the end...as: B-A, and not AB...Premier used that many times for ex...
Like also the idea of sampling own stuff, as you play something like a jam and then chop it...i tried it but don't do it usually, honeslty.
And then, i like sample chord, or a note suite, or phrase...and cut it note by note...on that way, i can play, so compose with sample!
And trust me it's so magic! I've got sample that i used in many songs, maybe 4, 5 different songs and believe me never sounding same! Never! cause you're playing differently, different velocity, touch, notes, compose, placement! That's what i like!
I like these beats with differents sample on the same track, De La Soul or Prince Paul so...are the champion of that, Kanye tried it many times nicely! It's an old school thing i know but having the good break with over it a sample as verse, with another for the break, with another different for the chorus...is hard!
Bomb Squad excel too!

  • SM: The moment I first knew I wanted to play music was

WM: 14 year old and during two years i listened to more and more music, tried to understand how, what, why,...should i give a suite to that hobby, is it for me, etc...and that during two years! So in my 16, i decided officialy that i have to continue, cause i had something, i felt something in me...and i'm saying that without a claim or arrogance, pride...______________

  • SM: Name an underestimated sound or noise...

WM: That's a weird question but i understand the mean...i think in this world there's too many understimated sounds, and so many unknown noises, sounds...but if i have to choose one, i'll say an orgasmic sound, not that hard orgasm lol but that sweet one, that you want to cherish it, that you want to make it longer, polish it, built that wave and make it sweet like a honey and diffuse an chill, cool, relax song...a deep mood in the space.

  • SM: What are some things to do in France that I wouldn't otherwise have known about unless you told me?

WM: Lol...you know some cliché....so..lol But i won't tell good things...as you see...this world is coming to bad spirits, bad move, conservatism, discriminations....socialy it's hard...and musically too, cause it's still the same problem, following the hype, the dirty vibe, the airplay is so wack, so culturally it's not the good place and the good moment for cats like me...sounding soulful, or jazzy...or in my veine...that philly/detroit/nyc...sound isn't prominent, unfortunately!
But there's some underground cats on soundcloud making their coming! wish them the best..
As you see i'm not a big promoter of the France.... lol

  • SM: Define Success...
WM: Success depend on the right moment and the right place! Sucess dosen't mean you have talent! It depends on an whole circle, team...It's about patience, and of course the quality control and skills of each person surround you: songwriter, players, engineer, management, producer, marketing pool...and total is 100%!
